A model’s portfolio generally begins with a good headshot. When seeking modeling opportunities, a model must have a strong portfolio consisting of several types of photographs including a combination of some of the following examples;
1. Headshot
2. Full length shot – fashion or formal
3. Full length shot – casual
4. Editorial shot (specifically shot for a magazine cover or article)
5. Natural light shot
6. Tear Sheet (page “torn” from magazine or other published work)
7. Interactive shot (with another model)
8. Character shot
9. “Beauty” shot
10. Environmental or outdoor shots
11. A “light-to-none” make-up shot
12. Swimwear/Underwear/Lingerie (Tasteful)
13. “Mood” shot (showing a particular emotion / mood)
14. “Object” shot (presenting / handling / seen with an item or object)
15. Other shots to “personalize” the portfolio.
This list is not exclusive. It’s important to remember that the portfolio is a fluid thing and that photos can be interchanged and rearranged depending on what the particular job or campaign calls for. In general, a model portfolio is 9×12 vertical in contrast to a photographer portfolio which is generally 11×14. Photos / samples should be arranged one per page, on the right side of the page with the left side being left blank so that images can be viewed one at a time and be aloud to “stand on their own”.
